Touch down in the city of neon and takoyaki
EVA Air BR166 departs Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) at 08:30. Arrive Kansai International Airport (KIX) at 12:10. Immigration, customs, and IC card purchase at the airport.
Take the JR Haruka Limited Express from KIX to Shin-Osaka (75 min), then transfer to the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line south to Namba. Check in to hotel near Namba.
📍 Namba AreaStroll along the iconic Dotonbori canal. See the famous Glico Running Man sign, Kani Doraku giant crab, and Ebisu Bridge. Sample street food: takoyaki at Aizuya (est. 1933), kushikatsu at Daruma.
📍 DotonboriCastles, markets, and the spirit of Osaka culture
One of Japan's most famous landmarks. Explore the castle museum (8 floors), view the panorama from the tower, and walk through the surrounding Nishinomaru Garden. Arrive early to beat crowds.
📍 Osaka CastleOsaka's "Kitchen" — a 580m covered market with 150+ vendors. Try fresh sashimi, grilled scallops, wagyu skewers, and fresh fruit. Walkable from Nipponbashi station.
📍 Kuromon MarketOsaka's electronics and anime district along Nipponbashi. Browse retro games, manga, figures, and second-hand electronics. Similar to Akihabara but more local feel.
📍 Den Den TownThe retro "New World" district built in 1912. Climb Tsutenkaku Tower (103m) for city views. Dinner at one of many kushikatsu restaurants — remember: no double-dipping!
📍 ShinsekaiAncient temples and friendly deer in Japan's first capital
Take Kintetsu Osaka Namba Line direct to Kintetsu Nara Station (40 min, ¥760). No transfer needed. Trains depart every 20–30 minutes.
Home to over 1,000 free-roaming sika deer, designated as natural monuments. Buy "shika senbei" (deer crackers, ¥200) from vendors to feed them. The deer bow their heads asking for treats!
📍 Nara ParkThe world's largest wooden building, housing a 15m bronze Great Buddha (Daibutsu) weighing 500 tons. Built in 752 AD, it's a UNESCO World Heritage site. Try squeezing through the pillar hole for good luck!
📍 Todai-jiOne of Japan's most celebrated Shinto shrines, founded in 768 AD. Famous for its 3,000 lanterns (stone and bronze). Walk the stone-paved path through primeval forest. Free to enter the grounds.
📍 Kasuga TaishaStroll through Naramachi, the well-preserved merchant district. Try Nara specialties: kakigori (shaved ice), miwa somen, and persimmon-leaf sushi (kakinoha-zushi). Head back to Osaka by 17:00.
📍 NaramachiThousand torii gates and the heart of old Japan
Check out and take JR Special Rapid (Shinkaisoku) from Osaka Station to Kyoto Station. Fast, frequent service — 13 minutes, ¥580. Covered by IC card. Check in to Kyoto hotel.
The iconic shrine with thousands of vermillion torii gates winding up Mt. Inari (233m). Free entry, open 24 hours. Walk the full trail to the summit for panoramic views (~2 hours round trip). Most photogenic early morning.
📍 Fushimi Inari"Kyoto's Kitchen" — a narrow 400m covered arcade with 100+ stalls selling pickled vegetables, tofu, matcha sweets, and fresh seafood. Try yuba (tofu skin), tamagoyaki on a stick, and fresh tamago sando.
📍 Nishiki MarketKyoto's famous geisha district. Walk along Hanamikoji Street's preserved machiya townhouses. Spot maiko (apprentice geisha) heading to evening appointments. Visit Yasaka Shrine, lit beautifully at dusk.
📍 GionBamboo forests, zen gardens, and the Golden Pavilion
The mystical bamboo path near Tenryu-ji temple. Go early (before 9am) to experience the towering bamboo stalks in near-solitude. The rustling sound is designated as one of Japan's "100 Soundscapes."
📍 Bamboo GroveA UNESCO World Heritage Zen temple with a stunning 14th-century garden. The garden design uses "borrowed scenery" (shakkei) — the Arashiyama mountains form the backdrop. Don't miss the dragon ceiling painting in the Hatto hall.
📍 Tenryu-jiThe iconic "Moon Crossing Bridge" spanning the Oi River. Best viewed from the north bank with Mt. Ogura behind. Rent a rowboat or pedal boat (¥2,000/hour) to see the riverside scenery from the water.
📍 Togetsukyo BridgeTry tofu kaiseki at Arashiyama Yoshimura (noodles with Arashiyama mountain view) or Shoraian (tofu cuisine on the riverbank). Also try matcha soft serve from Tsujiri Arashiyama branch.
Kyoto's most visited attraction — a Zen temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf, shimmering over its mirror pond. Originally built in 1397 as a shogun's villa. Best in afternoon light.
📍 Kinkaku-jiTemple on a cliff, ancient lanes, and a philosopher's walk
An ancient wooden temple built on a hillside, its iconic stage extends 13m over the forested slope without a single nail. "Jumping off the stage of Kiyomizu" means making a brave decision. UNESCO Heritage site. Stunning views of Kyoto.
📍 Kiyomizu-deraBeautifully preserved stone-paved lanes lined with traditional wooden machiya shops. Browse Kyoto pottery, lacquerware, and matcha sweets. Superstition: tripping on Sannenzaka brings 3 years of bad luck!
📍 SannenzakaA UNESCO World Heritage castle built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Famous for its "nightingale floors" (uguisubari) that chirp when walked on — an anti-ninja security system. Elaborately decorated Ninomaru Palace interior.
📍 Nijo CastleA 2km canal-side stone path named after philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who used it for daily meditation walks. Lined with hundreds of cherry trees (spectacular in spring). Pass Eikan-do and Nanzen-ji temples along the way.
📍 Philosopher's PathOptions: Izuju sushi (near Yasaka Shrine, est. 1781, famous for mackerel sushi), Kyoto ramen at Ippudo Kyoto, or splurge on kaiseki at Kikunoi Roan for authentic multi-course Kyoto cuisine.
Sky-high views, shopping streets, and farewell feast
Check out of Kyoto hotel. Take JR Special Rapid back to Osaka (13 min, ¥580). Store luggage at Osaka hotel or coin lockers at Osaka Station.
A spectacular pair of towers linked at the top by the "Floating Garden Observatory" on the 39th floor (170m). Unique ring-shaped observation deck offering 360° views of Osaka. One of Japan's most unique modern structures.
📍 Umeda Sky BuildingOsaka's premier covered shopping arcade stretching 600m. Mix of high-end brands (Apple Store, Uniqlo flagship) and local boutiques. Great for last-minute omiyage (souvenirs) at Daimaru department store.
📍 ShinsaibashiFinal night celebration on Dotonbori! Options: Kani Doraku for snow crab course, Ichiran ramen for solo-booth tonkotsu experience, or splurge on teppanyaki at Tsuruhashi Fugetsu (okonomiyaki). Watch the canal lights and soak it all in.
📍 DotonboriSayonara Osaka — until we meet again
Enjoy a final Japanese breakfast — try 7-Eleven's tamago sando or an onigiri set. Grab a last cup of canned Georgia coffee from the vending machine. Pack up and check out.
Take Nankai Rapit♂ express from Namba to Kansai Airport (38 min, ¥1,450). Departs every 30 min. Alternatively take the JR Kansai Airport Express (¥1,210 from Osaka station). Arrive 2.5 hours before departure.
EVA Air BR167 departs Kansai International Airport (KIX) at 13:30. Arrive Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) at 15:10. Trip complete — Sayōnara, Japan! さようなら!

伏見稲荷大社
10,000 vermillion torii gates wind up Mt. Inari. Free, open 24 hours. Most atmospheric at dawn.

Towering bamboo stalks along a narrow path. One of Japan's 100 Soundscapes. Go before 9am to avoid crowds.

Top two floors wrapped in gold leaf reflecting on Kyoko-chi pond. Originally a shogun's retirement villa from 1397.

Wooden temple built on a cliff face. Its veranda extends 13m with no nails. Panoramic views of Kyoto from the stage.

Osaka's entertainment hub on the canal. Glico Running Man sign, giant mechanical crab, wall-to-wall neon. Best after dark.

One of Japan's most iconic castles. 8-floor museum inside, surrounded by a vast park and cherry trees. Views from the top floor.

World's largest wooden building housing a 15m bronze Buddha, surrounded by 1,000+ free-roaming sacred deer.

Tokugawa shogunate's Kyoto palace. Walk the "nightingale floors" designed to alert against ninja intruders. Ornate painted screens inside.
📍 Google MapsGetting Around
The essential travel card for all JR trains, subways, and buses in the Kansai region. Buy at KIX airport on arrival. Works like an Octopus card — tap in, tap out. Also usable at convenience stores and vending machines.
Direct JR train from KIX Airport to Kyoto (75 min) via Osaka (50 min). The fastest and most convenient airport link. Reserved and non-reserved seats available.
The JR Shinkaisoku (Special Rapid Service) between Osaka Station and Kyoto Station is fast, frequent and cheap. No reservation needed — just tap your IC card.
Osaka's extensive subway system covers the whole city. The Midosuji Line (red) is the main north-south artery connecting Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Tennoji.
The best way to reach many Kyoto temples not near stations. Most tourist attractions are covered by lines 100, 101, and 205. Flat fare within the city zone.
Nankai Electric Railway's stylish limited express connecting KIX Airport to Namba (38 min). Distinctive iron-mask design. More convenient than Haruka if staying in Namba area.
What to Bring
June in Osaka and Kyoto is hot and humid (26–34°C) with a chance of rain. Pack light and breathable.
